It took a little while for these rejection letters to sink in and then I realized that I really need to respond to the editor at Viking since we did have a rapport going via e-mail and I needed to keep the line of communication open. So here is my response to her.

Hi XXXXX,

I wanted to send you a little note to say thank you for reviewing Franklin
Meriwether Knox. Though I was initially disappointed that Franklin was not
the right fit for Viking, I do understand your points and I really appreciate
you taking the time out to review my book proposal.

Currently I have a couple of other stories percolating and perhaps one of
these may be a better match. The first is about a little girl named Perdy
who set out to have a "Fabulously Perfect Perdy Day" that winds up to be
anything but perfect. The second idea is a concept book that revolves
around the question: Whose shoes are these shoes? Which explores the
use of shoes for specific functions (ex. flippers are for swimming, ice
skates are for skating). I would love to have the opportunity to send you a
copy of either or both these dummies for you to review when I have fully
developed them in a more finalized state.

I also wanted to mention that besides both writing and illustrating
picturebooks I am also interested in projects that are on a strictly
illustration basis as well (but I'm sure you probably guessed that). I would
love to have the opportunity to work with you in the future weather it be both
writing and illustrating or just illustrating.
